Calakmul emerges as one of the largest cities in the Mayan world, characterized by the presence of more than 120 steles scattered among its imposing structures and pyramids of vast dimensions.
Located in the second largest natural reserve in America, which was recognized by UNESCO as a Mixed World Heritage Site in 2014, Calakmul has been inhabited since the remote past, several centuries before our era.
Between the years 250 B.C. and 700 AD Calakmul reached its peak and became the most prominent city in the Mayan lowlands, surpassing in significance any other Mayan city in what is now Mexico.
The extensive archaeological zone of Calakmul covers 70 km² and is home to more than 6,000 structures. In its moment of splendor, it dominated a territory that extended over more than 13,000 km².
The archaeological zone of Calakmul presents five large complexes connected to the Great Central Plaza by ancient sacbés or causeways, thus constituting a monumental testimony of the greatness and complexity of this ancient civilization.
